Arizona Increases DUI Enforcement With Grants

It is well-known that Arizona has some of the strictest DUI laws and DUI enforcement in the USA. Even first-time offenders can face up to 10 days in jail and high fines, as well as the requirement of installing an ignition interlock device. Arizona law enforcement is now ramping up their resources to continue to fight DUIs with new grant funding.

Arizona Ramps Up Its DUI Enforcement With Grant Funding

Law enforcement in Arizona has begun combining resources to buy and equip DUI processing vans. These vans have computers that allow for instant processing of DUI offenders, saving time and getting officers back on patrol. They also allow for officers to conduct breathalyzer tests and draw blood as well as take fingerprint scans and apply for search warrants, all in one remote location. According to Amanda Jacinto, a spokeswoman for the Peoria Police Department who has been using these new processing vans, “it’s a vast improvement as far as getting as many impaired drivers as you can off the road and making sure more people get home safely.”

Other police departments in Arizona have used grant money to fund new breath-testing devices and improve educational materials and programs, such as “Know Your Limits” which has officers providing pamphlets and breath-based alcohol screenings to people as they leave drinking establishments like bars.

The Results Speak for Themselves

The recent ramp up of DUI patrols and enforcement over the Fourth of July holiday weekend resulted in a 27 percent increase in DUI-related arrests compared with 2013. According to Alberto Gutier, director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, “we all work together…Arizona is recognized nationally as the best of the best for DUI enforcement.” Arizona officials hope to maintain that reputation with new DUI enforcement devices as well as educational materials.
