Extreme DUI: Man Arrested After Being Woken Up

A man was recently found slouched over his wheel and sleeping alongside Highway 89A. The police found him after someone reported the truck sitting on the side of the road. When the police arrived and peered into the window of the truck, they found the 23-year-old local sound asleep. Upon being woken up, the driver tried to drive away. The police removed him from the truck and arrested him for DUI. The man’s blood alcohol content was measured at .180 percent, which is considered an extreme DUI. He has been charged with DUI as well as possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Extreme DUI Means Extreme Costs

The penalty for extreme DUI is often worse than that of a DUI in which the driver has a a blood alcohol content of .08 percent to .15 percent. In Arizona, the initial fine will be $900 instead of $250, plus several other fees which total up to $1250. A driver’s license can be revoked for a year and, when the driver finally receives the license back, he or she is often required to install an ignition interlock device.

If you are convicted of DUI, your life is going to be greatly affected in the long term. If you add drug charges to a DUI, or if you injure someone while driving drunk, the possibilities may now include a felony conviction. This could mean a mark on your permanent record which employers would see every time they run a background check.

DUIs and drug possession are serious, and the state wants people to feel the weight of that severity in order to discourage others from engaging in this type of behavior. That means that if you are charged with a crime, it is important to protect your rights. In any criminal case, including DUIs, you have the right to present evidence on your own behalf and vigorously defend yourself from the charges.
