Crash in Lake Brings DUI Charges

Phoenix police and firefighters were called to a lake near Interstate 17 and Peoria Avenue recently only to find that a truck had crashed into the water, according to a recent report. Utilizing a large crane, the police were able to pull the truck from the bottom of the lake, which is about 16 feet deep. Unsure if anyone else had been in the truck at the time of the crash, the police department called in a dive team, but the search did not locate any other victims.

According to police reports, the driver had apparently fled the scene immediately following the accident; however, he left behind a trail of wet footprints which led police straight to him. Police took the driver to the local hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and then arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

DUI Is Costly For Everyone

According to a spokesman for the Phoenix Fire Department, the department dispatches an average of 185 transports per day with an average cost of $860 per transport to retrieve victims from car accidents, many of which involve DUIs. The Arizona Department of Public Safety advises 17 percent of claims made to Arizona insurance companies are due to alcohol related crashes.

The cost of an ambulance transport may initially be paid by an individual's car insurance company, but the cost will more than likely be recouped by the agency through an increase in the driver's premium rates. This is particularly true in the case of a driver convicted of DUI, if the company will even maintain a policy on the driver. The average increase in an auto insurance policy is $400-$800 annually for an individual with a DUI arrest and conviction.

Arizona DUI laws require the suspension of driving privileges for a minimum of 90 days. This results in the need for a special insurance provision called SR22. An SR 22 report is required to be filed on any policy that is provided to high risk individuals who have had numerous tickets, DUIs or traffic accidents. When an individual applies for "SR 22 insurance," the agency will use a number of factors such as age, gender, marital status or other circumstances which could potentially place the driver into a high-risk category.
