Deadliest and Safest Arizona Cities, According to FBI

CourtIf you have been wondering how your Arizona city ranks in terms of “safety,” the FBI has issued a report that outlines the crime numbers for many Arizona cities and towns.

The data was compiled by a local real estate group for 42 cities.  Tucson ranked last with 36,000 crimes committed in that city in 2012.  Tucson residents have a 1 in 14 change of being a victim of some type of crime and a 1 in 138 chance of experience violent crime.  However, the city actually ranks below the national average for violence when compared to other cities of its same size. Sahuarita, 30 minutes away from Tucson, was ranked as the safest city, followed by Oro Valley, Gilbert, Florence and Paradise Valley.

What Is Safe?

As the Tucson police were quick to point out, it is difficult to label one city “safer” than another.  First, we must define what we mean by safe.

If “safe” means never experiencing any crime at all, few cities would qualify.  No matter how affluent the city or how pleasant its people, there will, at times, be crimes.  Most of these crimes, fortunately, will not be violent in nature, but vandalism, petty theft, loitering and traffic violations are still crimes and are prevalent everywhere you go.

If “safe” means the absence of violent crime, many cities could qualify as “safe,” even though they may lack other amenities such as good schools or a thriving social life.  Arizona has a much lower violent crime rate than some other states, so most of the crime experienced by its residents will be of the non-violent type.

If you are accused of any type of crime in Arizona, it is important for you to talk to an experienced criminal defense attorney about your case.  While Arizona is not a hotbed of violent crime, the state deals very sternly with any type of criminal activity.  A crime that might earn a “slap on the wrist” in some other locations may cause you to be fined or even incarcerated in Arizona.
