Reckless Driving In Arizona Can Result In Steep Penalties

Arizona law states that “a person who drives a vehicle in reckless disregard for the safety of persons or property is guilty of reckless driving.”

Reckless driving is a Class 2 misdemeanor and is punishable by up to four months in jail and a fine of $750.

However, if a person is convicted of reckless driving after a conviction for reckless driving, manslaughter, vehicular homicide, racing on highways or a DUI within the past 24 months, the person is guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor and will serve at least 20 days in jail. Further, the person’s driver’s license will be revoked for at least one year.

Possible Consequences To Your Motor Vehicle Record

Reckless driving is often added to other citations such as criminal speeding or DUI. The prosecutor may argue that by driving with alcohol in your system, you are driving with a reckless disregard for the safety of other people or property. A conviction for multiple offenses could result in severe consequences to your driver’s license.

Reckless driving, like DUI, results in eight points on your driving record. If you accumulate more than 12 points in one year, you face a license suspension of at least three months and up to one year. An experienced attorney can help you avoid possible suspensions due to points on your record.

Due to the steep penalties associated with a reckless driving conviction in Arizona, it is imperative that you have a skilled attorney on your side.
